Introduction

The Frederiksted Design Charrette, sponsored by the Virgin Islands Public Finance Authority (VIPFA), was the first initiative to examine the revitalization of the communities and the economy of St. Croix. The initial focus was the town of Frederiksted and its cruise ship industry. To accomplish this task, a design charrette was held, which is an intensive design session bringing together the local residents with top planning and design professionals in a collaborative "hands-on" planning session. The charrette was held in Frederiksted, St. Croix, from October 16-18, 2002.

The town of Frederiksted has a unique history and architecture that sets it apart from other Caribbean destinations. Therefore, the focus of the charrette was to enhance and showcase these attractions, some of which are:

  • Unique Urban Town Center
  • Waterfront Park
  • Ecological Area of Vincent Mason Pool
  • Snorkeling and Diving
  • Historical Fort and Museum
  • Historical Architecture
  • Town Park with Sports/Activity Center
  • Beachfront and Waterfront Opportunities
  • Rainforest
